The V&A Museum / RRS Discovery at Dundee

The V&A Museum in Dundee opened in September 2018 and is already an established tourist attraction on Dundee’s impressive new waterfront. Situated across the road from Dundee railway station, why not take the train to Dundee and enjoy a day exploring the V&A and the RRS Discovery. The train from Perth to Dundee takes 22 minutes, so if you have a car with you, leave it in Perth and take in the views of the Tay estuary from the comfort of the train.

The V&A Museum of Design in Dundee is one of Scotland’s, and Britain’s, most exciting new buildings of the twenty-first century. Ten years in the planning and costing £80M, the result is an amazing architectural statement that dominates the waterfront skyline with its shape inspired by the cliffs of north east Scotland. It is also the first V&A museum, anywhere in the world, outside London.

Built in Dundee and launched in 1901, the RRS Discovery was the barque-rigged auxiliary steamship that took Scott and Shackleton on their first expedition to Antarctica between 1901 and 1904. Visit the museum to learn the story of the ship and crew, then walk around the deck and cramped spaces below decks.

Dundee is a city with a buzz these days, so once you’ve explored the waterfront and enjoyed the views out over the Tay Estuary, take a walk up into the city and visit the Dundee Contemporary Arts Centre (DCA) and have a wander round the shops.

If you fancy walking a bit further, then make your way to the top of Dundee Law, which at 572 feet (174 metres) is the highest point in Dundee. Your reward for hiking to the top of the Law is a panoramic view over the entire city as well as taking in the Sidlaw Hills and along the length of the Tay estuary and out to the North Sea.

Even further away from the waterfront and beyond Dundee’s northern ring road, the Kingsway, is Camperdown Country Park, which is home to the Camperdown parkrun on Saturday mornings at 9.30. Parkrun tourists from further afield, please note the later start time of Scottish parkruns.
